Martin Zohn

Martin S. Zohn leads the Business Solutions, Governance, Restructuring & Bankruptcy Group of the Los Angeles office. Marty has played a central role in a number of Southern California’s most significant business reorganizations, both in and outside of Chapter 11.

Such matters have included court-approved representation of the official creditors’ committee or debtor in several of the largest Chapter 11 corporate reorganizations in California (for example, Knudsen Corporation, Foremost Dairies, Gibraltar Financial Corporation, Hansen Foods, Treesweet Companies and Lionsgate Films).

Marty has also represented purchasers of financially distressed businesses both in and outside of Chapter 11, and has represented major secured and unsecured creditors, investors, investment bankers and advisors.

During the Iranian hostage crisis when Iranian assets were blocked and frozen by Executive Order of the President of the United States, Marty represented the private commercial banks of Iran. The billions of dollars in controversy were eventually resolved through a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Marty is frequently named and quoted in national print and electronic media, including The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, CNBC, USA Today, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Washington Post, and other major metropolitan newspapers. However, many of Marty’s most successful client representations were completed without publicity, public disclosure, litigation or Chapter 11 proceedings.

Marty’s client representations have included diverse industries and sectors of the economy including, for example, entertainment, communications, technology, media, computer, automotive, manufacturing, food processing, financial institutions, hotel, transportation, wholesale, retail, service, energy, metals and health care.

Marty is an adjunct professor of law at the University of Southern California Law School (“USC”), Vice President of the Financial Lawyers Conference, and Chair of Public Counsel, the nation’s largest pro bono law firm.
