Matthew C. Spaulding is a member of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLPs Corporate practice group, Matthew’s work includes a focus on commercial transactions, technology, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), data breach, and data privacy matters.
He also works with the firm’s Litigation practice group, advising clients on electronic discovery (“e-discovery”) matters. Matthew has completed e-discovery training and testing provided by the Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists concerning best practices in e-discovery and litigation.
Matthew’s motivation for attending law school was fueled by sibling rivalry. His twin brother started law school a year before he did, returning home during school breaks to impart his legal knowledge around the dinner table.
Determined not to be outsmarted by his twin brother, Matthew wisely enrolled in law school. As a rules-oriented person since childhood, becoming a lawyer has been a natural fit for him. Matthew is passionate about the law and helping others solve their problems through the law and our legal system.
Hardworking, Matthew brings to the table a perspective of what it is like to run a business and manage people in a variety of roles. Prior to law school he worked for a mechanical contractor and then as a logistics supervisor in a soybean processing and biodiesel plant, managing both truck and rail logistics, a rail yard, employees, and new construction projects.
During Matthew’s summers at home from college, he worked in grain elevators shoveling, performing maintenance, and loading rail cars and barges on the Ohio River. While an undergraduate student at Purdue, he worked as a student manager for the Purdue University men’s basketball team.
These experiences have given Matthew a unique perspective, enabling him to more quickly identify the challenges a particular legal issue may pose to different roles throughout an organization. These experiences have also taught Matthew how to work hard and to be willing and ready to do whatever it takes to get the job done properly.
Prior to joining Shumaker, Matthew clerked for the Honorable Magistrate Judge Vernelis K. Armstrong in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. While attending law school, Matthew was an associate member of the University of Toledo Law Review. He was also actively involved in the Student Bar Association at the University of Toledo.
Before clerking in federal court, he served one year as a Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) in the criminal division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio and prosecuted a variety of criminal cases, including federal Central Violations Bureau (“CVB”) tickets, general criminal cases, and multi-defendant conspiracy cases.
