Matthew Stein’s practice includes defending class actions and complex litigation in state and federal courts nationwide and handling internal and government investigations. Mr. Stein also represents companies involved in mergers and acquisitions to provide counsel about litigation risk, indemnification arrangements and other issues.

Mr. Stein’s experience includes representing companies in sales practices lawsuits across the United States and with website compliance projects, representing a financial services company in the defense of its primary deferred compensation program against state wage law challenges, representing companies and individuals in government investigations, and counseling companies in litigation issues for M&A transactions.

In addition, he has counseled companies on information security issues and the discovery of documents from non-U.S. entities or containing personally identifiable information otherwise subject to data protection laws (including HIPAA, the E.U. data protection directive and the GDPR). He also has dealt extensively with other discovery and e-discovery issues.

Mr. Stein holds a CIPP/US certification, which covers topics in U.S. privacy laws and regulations and the legal requirements for the responsible transfer of sensitive personal data to/from the U.S., the EU and other jurisdictions.

He also is a contributing author to Skadden’s Class Action Chronicle, a quarterly publication focused on developments in class action litigation. In addition to his work at Skadden, Mr. Stein was selected as one of Boston’s Future Leaders (Class of 2014) by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and a City Awake Delegate in 2016.

He also is a member of the ABA Section of Litigation’s Book Publishing Board and a coordinating editor of the ABA’s Survey of State Class Action Lawtreatise. He regularly writes about class actions and civil procedure, and contributed two chapters to the Class Action Fairness Act: Law and Strategytreatise.
