Meghann E. LaFountain grew up in East Hampton, Connecticut and went to the University of Connecticut, where she majored in Political Science and minored in American Studies and International Studies. She graduated summa cum laude, became a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was a University Scholar.
Her University Scholar thesis, Behind the Bench: An Analysis of Internal Communications and Interactions between U.S. Supreme Court Justices, analyzed the decision-making process of the U.S. Supreme Court in two significant death penalty cases in the 1970s. Meghann was also an Honors Scholar and was awarded the honor of Outstanding Woman Scholar.
While an undergraduate, Meghann interned in the Civil Clerk’s Office at the Middlesex Superior Court in Middletown. She also worked as a legal assistant at another local firm, a job she continued during law school. She worked on matters ranging from personal injury litigation and criminal defense to estate planning and probate.
Meghann received her juris doctorate at the University of Connecticut School of Law. She graduated with honors in 2011 and obtained a Graduate Certificate in Human Rights. She was the recipient of multiple awards for excellence in class performance, earned a position on the Connecticut Law Review and served as its Symposium Editor.
During law school, Meghann worked as a student representative in the Asylum and Human Rights Clinic. This is where her interest in immigration law began. It allowed her to obtain valuable experience in the field.
She successfully represented two children in their affirmative applications for asylum due to persecution suffered by their family in Pakistan, resulting in grants of asylum for both children. Her experience with the clinic made her realize that she wanted to devote her legal career to serving those seeking better lives in the United States.
