Michael D. Kimerer has been practicing law in Phoenix since 1970 when he left California and joined the law firm of Lewis & Roca. Shortly thereafter, he and John J. Flynn started the firm of Flynn, Kimerer, Thinnes & Derrick which principally did criminal defense work, even though a portion of Mr.
Kimerer’s practice was devoted to civil litigation. Mr. Kimerer is a certified criminal law specialist and devotes his entire practice to criminal defense work with a special emphasis on white collar and environmental crimes.
He is licensed to practice in Arizona and California and several Federal courts throughout the United States, including the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Kimerer is a graduate of the University of California Law School at Davis, and received their Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999. He is a member of both the Arizona and California State Bars, and he has served as Chairman of the ABA Criminal Justice Section Committee on Specialization in Criminal Law.
Michael D. Kimerer was one of the founders of Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice and served as that organization’s first President from 1986 to 1988. In 1993, the organization presented him with the John J. Flynn Memorial Award for distinguished service to the criminal defense bar, and in 2006 honored him with their vanguard award for championing the cause of criminal justice.
Mr. Kimerer is also a Fellow and Past President of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers, a national organization of the leading criminal defense lawyers in the United States.
Mr. Kimerer was a member of the Arizona State Bar Board of Governors from 1989 – 1997, and for more than a year served as the Probable Cause Panelist for the Arizona State Bar on discipline matters.
He is a member of the State Bar’s Environmental Resources Section, the Criminal Justice Section and the Membership Assistance Program. He was State Bar President from 1995-1996, and served on the Arizona Judicial Council as the State Bar representative from 1990-1997.
