Michael J. Garvey is a member of the Firm’s Litigation Department in the New York office. Mike is a general commercial litigator. He is an experienced crisis manager who represents Fortune 100 clients in a wide range of high stakes, complex commercial matters.
He has successfully handled numerous internal investigations and shareholder litigations, including matters on behalf of KKR, Accenture, L-3 Communications, the AIG Board of Directors, directors of Stryker, and Travelers.
Mike has worked on some of the largest insurance and reinsurance coverage litigations in the last decade, including matters in behalf of AIG, American Nuclear Insurers, Travelers, and Swiss Re. Mike was on the team that successfully tried to a verdict Swiss Re’s claim against WTC leaseholder Larry Silverstein that the 9/11 terrorist attack was one occurrence under Silverstein’s $3.5 billion insurance policy.
Mike has successfully defended Firm clients in a variety of large antitrust matters. He recently secured early dismissal with prejudice of an antitrust class action suit against Tradeweb. He has achieved similar successes on behalf of The International Swaps and Derivatives Association, Travelers, CSL Limited, and Yingli Solar.
Mike helps many of the Firm’s largest clients manage complex crises, including on matters related to corporate governance, cross-border litigation, government investigations and public relations issues. He handles large corporate and international arbitrations, overseas litigation, M&A litigation, complex bankruptcy matters, and product liability work.
He also represents the Firm’s Exempt Organizations and Personal Planning clients on litigation matters. Finally, Mike has an active pro bono practice and serves on the Board of Queens Legal Services, one of the largest providers of civil legal services to low-income people in the United States.
He is consistently recognized by The Legal 500 U.S. and Euromoney’s Benchmark Litigation as a National and New York “Litigation Star” in Insurance. Mike joined Simpson Thacher in 1998, served as a law clerk to the Hon. Albert M. Rosenblatt, a judge on the New York State Court of Appeals, from 1999–2001, returned to the Firm in 2001 and became partner in 2007.
He graduated cum laude from the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1995 with a dual degree in English and Music. He graduated cum laude from St. John’s University School of Law in 1998 where he served on Law Review.
