Michael Grant

Michael A. Grant is an Associate in Dechert’s International Trade practice.  Mr. Grant advises clients on matters relating to U.S. national security laws, export controls and sanctions, and trade remedies.

Mr. Grant focuses his practice on regulatory defense and compliance with sanctions programs promulgated by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and export controls, including the Export Administration Regulation (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

In addition, Mr. Grant works on matters relating to trade remedies before the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

Mr. Grant’s clients are from an array of industries, including aerospace, banking, defense, energy, financial services, higher education, insurance, manufacturing, pharmaceutical and shipping.

Mr. Grant has considerable experience providing counseling, developing license strategies, engineering sanctions compliance programs and negotiating sanctions provisions to U.S. and foreign companies conducting business in OFAC-sanctioned countries.

He has participated in over 50 export control-related investigations and voluntary disclosures, in addition to advising clients in U.S. trade remedy disputes.

Prior to joining Dechert, Mr. Grant was an associate at a well-known international law firm.  Before attending law school at Georgetown University, Mr. Grant spent a year in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps NW in Aberdeen, Washington, running an afterschool program. Afterward, he worked for non-profits focusing on child development.

• Conducted internal investigations, prepared voluntary disclosures and designed company-wide compliance programs pursuant to the ITAR, EAR and OFAC sanctions.
• Designed a compliance program and provided training for a defense contractor operating in Iraq and Afghanistan.
• Counseled a U.S. technology company in the reclassification of encryption commodities.
• Designed reclassification protocols for client products and technologies transitioning regulatory regimes pursuant to Export Control Reform.
• Assisted companies in identifying CFIUS covered transactions and filed CFIUS voluntary notices.
