Mayer Brown

Michael E, Lackey serves on Mayer Brown’ global Management Committee. He previously served on the firm’s global Partnership Board, as lead of the global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice and as the Partner-in-Charge of the Washington, DC office.

Mike also serves on the Global Advisory Board of the Women in Law Empowerment Forum (WILEF), and he was one of six men first named to serve on that Board. He currently serves WILEF as its Deputy Global Chairperson for Gold Standard Certification.

Mike practices both civil and criminal litigation, focusing in particular on complex antitrust, cartel, and competition cases.  In his more than 20 years of private practice, Mike has represented major companies and individuals in numerous state and federal proceedings, including multi-district and class actions with billions of dollars of potential liability at stake.

He has also represented clients in grand jury proceedings and governmental investigations (including congressional investigations), using his experience as a former federal prosecutor in the Office of Independent Counsel David M. Barrett.

In addition to being an accomplished litigator, Mike is nationally recognized for his knowledge of electronic discovery issues and co-leads the firm’s Electronic Discovery & Information Governance practice.

He serves as a member of the Board of Advisors to the Georgetown University Law School Advanced E-Discovery Institute, is an Advisory Cabinet Member to The Masters Conference, and is a member of The Sedona Conference® Working Group on Electronic Document Retention and Production.

Chambers USA has recognized Mike as one of the top E-discovery attorneys nationwide since 2010 (the first year when this category was created), and in 2014, it reports that “He knows the area and can navigate through the issues to achieve solutions.”

Mike is also recognized in this category in Chambers Global. In addition, he is recognized as a Washington DC SuperLawyer® by Thomson Reuters, a DC “Power Player” by SmartCEO  magazine, and by The Washington Post magazine as one of the top attorneys in the city. Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Mike clerked for the Honorable Jacques Wiener, Jr. of the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He also has served as an Associate Independent Counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel David M. Barrett. Before entering the legal profession, Mike was a lieutenant in the US Navy and graduated from the “Top Gun” school. He has a degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from MIT.

Mike has long volunteered for his alma matter, and he currently serves as the Regional Chairperson for the MIT Educational Council. Because of his military, engineering, class action, criminal, and appellate background, Mike is often sought to handle high-profile litigation involving complex technical and legal concepts.
