Michael Kunselman is a partner in Alston & Bird’s Energy Group. Michael focuses his practice primarily on matters involving federal electricity regulation. He represents a broad array of electric industry clients across the country, such as investor-owned electric utilities, transmission owners, generation owners and developers, end-use customers, and a large regional independent system operator.
Over the past two decades, Michael has been involved with most of the key issues in the electricity industry, including wholesale market design and oversight, standards of conduct, mandatory reliability requirements, and transmission planning.
Michael has particular strength in the areas of generator interconnection and renewable power. He represented the first wind generator in the U.S. to obtain regulatory approval to receive compensation for providing reactive power service.
He has represented system operators, transmission owners, and developers on interconnection issues in electricity markets in California, New York, New England, and the Southwest. Michael also frequently represents clients in administrative litigation and settlement proceedings.
Michael received his J.D., with honors, from the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the editorial board of the Maryland Law Review. He received his B.A. from the University of Maryland.
