Nate Bolin has significant experience advising clients in compliance, transactional, litigation, policy and regulatory matters involving U.S. export controls, U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), economic sanctions, and related areas of national security and international trade law.

In corporate transactions and mergers and acquisitions, Nate regularly advises buyers, sellers and investors on the impact of U.S. export controls, customs laws, trade remedy laws, existing bilateral and multilateral trade agreements, and ongoing negotiations of new trade agreements on potential, pending and completed deals.

He also counsels clients on strategic use of these laws to grow their businesses and add value to their investments. Nate has extensive experience advising clients in investigations, both internal and governmental, involving export controls and sanctions laws.

He has represented numerous companies in the information technology, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defense, oil and gas, medical, financial services, transportation, logistics, and consumer products industries in investigating and successfully resolving these matters.

Nate is an experienced litigator in trade disputes and frequently appears on behalf of clients before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of International Trade, the U.S. International Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Commerce and binational panels convened pursuant to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

He also advises on matters of law and policy related to bilateral, regional and multilateral trade agreements including NAFTA, the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS), potential U.S. trade agreements with the UK and Japan, and the WTO Agreements.

Owing to his extensive experience in export control and ITAR matters, Nate was appointed by the Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs to serve on the U.S. State Department’s Defense Trade Advisory Group for the 2018-2020 term. Nate also serves as a member of Law360’s Aerospace & Defense Editorial Advisory Board.

Nate frequently writes and speaks to international audiences on current issues related to U.S. export controls, national security, economic sanctions, customs laws, trade agreements and trade remedy laws. He also teaches LL.M. students in the International and Comparative Law program at George Washington University Law School, where he has been a visiting scholar researching issues of international trade law.

Before entering private practice, Nate was an International Trade Specialist at the International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce, working on trade negotiations and trade agreement enforcement and compliance.

He also was a law clerk at the Office of the Legal Advisor at the U.S. Department of State, where he worked on regulatory and litigation matters including investor-state arbitration and proceedings before the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague.

Nate is an active contributor to the DBR on Data blog, covering issues ranging from Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) reviews of IT transactions, to the various export controls on encryption, cloud computing services, information technologies, and the defense industry.

Nate spent several years working and studying in Japan, including as a student at Waseda University in Tokyo and a program officer with the U.S.-Japan Foundation, and is fluent in Japanese.
