Patrick C. Keane is a globally recognized Intellectual Property (IP) standout, blending technical, legal and business expertise. He has significant electrical engineering/computer science experience, and is an Executive Shareholder in Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney’s firm wide management team who assists with diversity and inclusion initiatives. Patrick balances patent litigation strategy, targeted use of USPTO post-grant AIA proceedings, and strategic development of IP portfolios to optimize his clients’ business leverage, revenue and product sales. His expertise includes transactional skills with SEP/FRAND and IoT licensing models.
Patrick is active in the Federal Circuit Bar Association as co-Chair of the USPTO Committee and interfaces with global IPO leadership to help drive policy-based initiatives aimed at improving IP quality and efficiency. Patrick received the George Hutchinson Committee Service Award in June 2016 for service to the Federal Circuit Bar Association and was elected to serve on the board in June 2017.
Patrick focuses his practice on all aspects of Intellectual Property (IP) counseling, including patent litigation, post grant proceedings such as inter partes review and post grant review, and strategic development and enforcement of international IP portfolios to optimize revenue and product sales.
Patrick has provided strategic guidance on company growth via evaluation of IP and its role in business activities such as joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, government contracts and franchising opportunities.
He focuses on building multi-disciplinary client services teams as appropriate to optimize collaboration with in-house counsel and as business drivers to manage risk and create innovative solutions to legal issues. He has experience with intellectual property law matters directed to both pre-America Invents Act (AIA) procedures and post AIA procedures.
Patrick’s litigation background includes more than 20 years of experience representing small, mid and large cap companies in federal court actions and in proceedings before the International Trade Commission, including litigation for Fortune 500 companies, such as Lockheed Martin and Hewlett Packard. Patrick has been recognized internationally for his breadth of IP expertise and favorable resolution of international IP disputes.
In 2017, Patrick was named a world-leading IP strategist by IAM Strategy 300 – The World’s Leading IP Strategists. IAM’s Patent 1000 publication has repeatedly recognized Patrick and noted that he “has a strong foundation in all areas of intellectual property and does a fantastic job no matter what he focuses on.
He is a dedicated, resourceful and skilled IP strategist and a creative problem solver.” In addition, Patrick continues to be recognized for his work in the intellectual property practice as an IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property.
Patrick’s experience in patent procurement includes six years as an examiner in computer electronics and software related arts of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His engineering experience includes work as a design engineer for AMP, Inc. in Harrisburg, PA. Patrick has published numerous articles and is a regular presenter at international conferences directed to IP protection, licensing and litigation. He is engaged in numerous philanthropic activities and is currently a member of the President’s Advisory Council of Villanova University.
Patrick is licensed to practice in Maryland and before the Maryland Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
