Peter J. Irwin is a corporate partner and Chair of the firm’s Real Estate Group. He regularly advises clients on real estate acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, financings, restructurings and net lease transactions. Mr. Irwin is ranked as a leading lawyer by Chambers USA, where clients describe him as “one of the best transactional lawyers” they have ever worked with, who “is quite constructive in approaching a transaction in a commercial manner and getting through it with no undue risk to us,” and is “very practical, very commercial and technically excellent,” with one client adding, “I always feel that he’s looking out for us and our interests.”

He is also noted in The Legal 500 US, where clients praise him as “formidable,” “incredibly knowledgeable” and a “skilled negotiator” whose “judgment, attention to detail, and attentiveness are unparalleled.”

Mr. Irwin recently authored a chapter entitled “Real Property” in the Health Care Mergers and Acquisitions Answer Book (Practising Law Institute, 2018). He frequently speaks on a variety of real estate topics, including most recently at the New York State Bar Association’s Advanced Real Estate Topics 2017.

Mr. Irwin joined Debevoise in 1999 and became a partner in 2004. He received his B.S. from Cornell University in 1993 and his J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law in 1996.

He was selected as a David Rockefeller Fellow for the class of 2012 by the Partnership for New York City. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association’s Real Property Law Section and a member of the Real Estate Board of New York.

  • JPMorgan Asset Management in a joint venture with L&L Holding Co., Normandy Real Estate Partners, affiliates of Allianz Real Estate, and other institutional investors, in the acquisition, financing and redevelopment of the Terminal Stores building in the West Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.
  • Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in its formation of a joint venture with WPT Industrial REIT and AIMCo to aggregate a portfolio of industrial properties in the U.S.
  • JPMorgan Asset Management in its sale of The Rivington, a luxury apartment building in Hoboken, NJ.
  • Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in the formation of a joint venture with JBG SMITH to develop and own 1900 N Street, an office building located in the Dupont Circle area of Washington, D.C.
  • JPMorgan Asset Management as advisor to a large domestic pension fund in establishing a programmatic general partnership joint venture with L&L Holding to invest in New York City real estate.
  • JPMorgan Asset Management in the sale of The Girard, a multi-family development in Boston’s South End neighborhood, to Equity Residential.
  • JPMorgan Asset Management in the sale of 425 Lexington Avenue, a 749,000-square-foot office building in New York City.
  • JPMorgan Asset Management in a joint venture development and sale with Hines Holdings of an office building located at 7 Bryant Park in New York City.
  • JPMorgan Asset Management in the sale with Sherwood Equities of an office building located at 370 Lexington Avenue in New York City.
  • A foreign investor in the acquisition of an interest, recapitalization and construction financing for an investment vehicle sponsored by Tishman Speyer Properties that is developing The Spiral, a 2.85 million square foot tower in the Hudson Yards district of New York City.
