Mr. Phillip Gordon Svalya graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1966 with the intent of becoming a nuclear physicist. After a year in nuclear physics graduate studies, he decided the life of a nuclear physicist was not for him.
After a brief tour of duty on a minesweeper, Mr. Svalya was accepted for training as a Navy SEAL. He spent the next 18 months with SEAL Team 1. During this time, SEAL Team 1 received two Presidential Unit Citations, the highest award given to a military unit for bravery.
After being appointed as SEAL Team 1 legal officer, Mr. Svalya found that he enjoyed legal work, and decided to enroll in law school. After graduating from the law school at the University of Santa Clara, he tried cases in various fields including real property, divorce and personal injury.
He found personal injury to be the most challenging, particular automobile accidents, since those cases usually involve mechanical principals. His engineering background has been very helpful in determining liability and causation. For the past 35 years, Mr. Svalya has been handling personal injury cases.
He takes great satisfaction in doing pro bono work for charitable trusts and sits on the board of four non-profit corporations, two of which do Christian medical relief work. Mr. Svalya carefully selects his cases; the more difficult, the better.
