Ms. Rachel R. James practices exclusively in the area of family law. She began her legal career at a boutique family law firm in Arizona. While practicing law in Arizona, Ms. James prepared and reviewed prenuptial agreements, litigated move away cases, participated in mediations, and handled family law appeals.
Ms. James currently manages high-asset, and often high-conflict, divorce matters from beginning to end. She has extensive experience preparing and reviewing discovery, preparing for and conducting depositions, dealing with experts regarding various family law issues, and preparing clients for mediation and trial.
Ms. James has handled cases involving significant custody disputes, paternity issues, domestic violence, move away requests, the valuation of start-up companies and other difficult to value assets, alternative valuation dates, income imputations, vocational evaluations, complex reimbursement claims, date of separation disputes, spousal support and child support.
As a result of her experience, Ms. James is able to effectively navigate the complicated, and often emotional, practice of family law. Ms. James received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Iowa and her Juris Doctor, Cum Laude, from California Western School of Law.
Ms. James is admitted to practice law in California, Arizona and the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Ms. James has served as a trustee on the San Diego Law Library Foundation Board and is a member of the Equality and Action Committee of the Lawyers Club of San Diego. She also volunteers with Point Loma Little League.
While in Arizona, Ms. James was an active member of the Maricopa County Bar Association, serving on the Board of Directors for both the Young Lawyers and Family Law Divisions. Ms. James was also named the Young Lawyers Division Member of the Year in 2010 for serving as the chair of the Race Judicata committee, an event that raises money for domestic violence education.
