Rebecca Allison Fiss is the founder and principal attorney at Fiss Law PLLC. While I was a student at law school, I began to understand the importance of estate planning in North Carolina. I and a group of classmates travelled all over eastern NC, communicating with local community organizers and writing estate planning documents for low-income families at law clinics.
The effect on these communities of people dying without basic estate planning was obvious. North Carolina intestacy laws (which take over in the absence of a will) occasioned the uneven distribution of property among sometimes distant relatives, thus making improving or selling the properties (or using them as collateral for loans) hard or impossible. Homes were dilapidated, bringing about vermin and crime in lowering the neighborhood property values.
After completing law school, while serving under a federal judge and later at an online bank, I continued to write estate planning documents as a volunteer lawyer at local wills clinics. I realized my own circumstances and the distinct combination of my legal and technology skills empowered me to offer something that is not available to most North Carolina families: comfortable estate planning at an affordable price.
My belief is that every person, regardless of their net worth, deserves the opportunity to access high-quality legal services, including estate planning. My distinct circumstance and strictly online business model allow me to dedicate the time and attention it takes to make sure my clients’ goals are achieved and their families and interests are secured.
