Rick Dunning is an associate in the Intellectual Property Practice Group in the firm’s San Diego (Del Mar) office. He advises clients in all areas of intellectual property law, including patent and other intellectual property litigation, strategic portfolio development, technology licensing, transactional matters, counterfeits, and gray markets.
Mr. Dunning is a patent attorney and electrical engineer providing a full range of intellectual property services to a broad range of companies and startups with a focus on strategic patent planning and execution including patent drafting, prosecution, appeals, and post-grant procedures.
His technical expertise includes wireless communications, networks, network security, semiconductors, computer hardware and software, circuits, digital signal processing, image processing, cryptography, consumer electronics, audio, video, medical devices, geolocation, and robotics.
Mr. Dunning is also skilled in patent and trademark enforcement and litigation, contract and license negotiation, and due diligence investigations supporting mergers and acquisitions, investments, patent sales, and securities issuance. He recently shut down several counterfeiting operations in China and a large gray-market ring in the UK.
Before joining the firm Mr. Dunning served as patent counsel in both corporate and law firm environments, and managed his own law practice for over a decade. Before entering the legal profession Mr. Dunning designed radar and sonar systems for the Department of Defense and satellite communications systems for NASA.
