Roger C. Geary’s tenure of over 25 years with Shook has provided him significant experience in Missouri and nationally in the trial and case management of product liability cases. Roger joined Shook in 1985 after completing a two-year clerkship with U.S. District Court Judge Scott O. Wright in Kansas City, Missouri.
Roger has acted as lead trial counsel in state and federal jury trials, and has first-chaired major product liability trials in Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, Minnesota, California, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida and Missouri.
In those cases, he supervised trial teams that included an array of skilled and dedicated professionals, including other attorneys, medical analysts, paralegals and support staff, along with local counsel.
His cases have involved a broad spectrum of product liability issues such as state of the art, product design, product warnings, state of public knowledge and medical causation.
His courtroom examinations have involved experts in many different fields, including pathologists, mineralogists, electron microscopists, industrial hygienists, psychiatrists, historians, chemists, and experts in product design and public health.
Roger’s defense verdict in a product liability case in Baltimore was recognized by The American Lawyer publication Verdict Search in its national list of most significant defense verdicts in 2003; his defense verdict in a product liability case in New York City was recognized by Verdict Search in its national list of most significant defense verdicts in 2004; and his defense verdict in a product liability case in Independence, Missouri, was recognized by Missouri Lawyers Weekly in its list of top defense verdicts for Missouri in 2006.
In addition to his jury trial experience, Roger has argued cases before state and federal appellate courts, including the Missouri Court of Appeals and the U.S. Courts of Appeals, Seventh and Eighth Circuits.
Roger previously served for several years as chair of Shook’s Search Committee and as chair of Shook’s Summer Associate program. He has also been active in Shook trial practice programs.
He has authored a chapter on evidence for West Publishing Co.’s Missouri Practice series; written CLE materials published by The Missouri Bar; and published in the Missouri Law Review. Roger has been included by regional publications on lists of the best lawyers in Missouri.
Roger received his Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri School of Law, where he was a member of the Missouri Law Review. He previously served as a board member for the University of Missouri Alumni Association’s Kansas City Chapter and as a member of the University of Missouri Law School Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
He is a member of the University of Missouri’s Jefferson Club and the Law Society of the University of Missouri Law School. Roger has also been a guest lecturer in trial practice at the University of Missouri Law School and currently serves as an adjunct professor teaching the class Product Liability.
In 2008, Roger was awarded the “Citation of Merit” by the University of Missouri Law School, which the school describes as the highest award it bestows on its graduates.
