Ryan A. Schmid is an associate and intellectual property lawyer with Foley & Lardner LLP. His practice focuses on patent litigation where he represents high-profile technology companies. He has also represented branded pharmaceutical companies in Paragraph IV litigations. Mr. Schmid’s practice also involves patent counseling through opinion work.
His experience includes U.S. District Court litigations, International Trade Commission (ITC) Section 337 investigations, Inter Partes Reviews (IPRs) before the Patent Trials and Appeals Board, and appellate work before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Mr. Schmid has litigated various technologies, including LEDs, semiconductor packaging, capacitive sensing, consumer electronics, wireless devices/protocols, mechanical devices, and pharmaceuticals.
Mr. Schmid also gives back to the community through his commitment to pro bono representation. He is a member of the firm’s IP Litigation Practice.
During law school, Mr. Schmid gained experience as a legal extern at the State Attorney’s Office for the 19th Judicial Circuit of Florida. Prior to entering law school, Mr. Schmid worked as a systems engineer for Rockwell Collins.

Mr. Schmid received his law degree from the University of Florida Levin College of Law (J.D., cum laude, 2010), where he served as a Law School Ambassador and as a member of the Journal of Technology Law and Policy.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida (B.S., cum laude, 2006), where he majored in electrical engineering.

Representative Matters :
Represented a leading tier one manufacturer in the automobile industry in a complex patent infringement case against an obstinate opponent in which we have filed nine motions to compel.
Of the five motions to compel that we filed on behalf of our client and that have been ruled upon, we have won all five. One other motion to compel remains pending and three were dismissed because the parties resolved the issues after the motions were filed.
