S. James Boumil III is an associate in the Litigation Department and a member of the Patent Law and Intellectual Property Groups. He is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. James assists clients in obtaining, enforcing and licensing intellectual property rights in the U.S. and abroad.
He has experience with a range of patented technologies including lasers, optics, plasma devices, electrochemical devices, medical devices, mechanical systems, electronics, semiconductor devices, communications systems, network security systems, robotics, deep learning algorithms, musical devices, software and business methods.
He also has significant experience in non-patent intellectual property matters, including maintaining an active trademark practice, preparing copyright filings, and conducting IP due diligence in connection with corporate transactions.
James also has diverse experience in a wide variety of administrative and court proceedings. His prosecution experience includes patent reexaminations, inter partes reviews before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and contested trademark proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, as well as equivalent proceedings abroad.
His litigation experience spans the fields of patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, antitrust, private equity and other complex commercial litigation areas. He has assisted clients with matters in a range of federal forums spanning the U.S. District Court to the U.S. Supreme Court.
James is also an adjunct professor at Boston College Law School, where he presently teaches intellectual property licensing and technology transfer. A frequent speaker on intellectual property law, James has lectured in a variety of graduate programs, including the University of Chicago Law School, Tufts University School of Medicine and the Heller School at Brandeis University.
James is also a contributor to Proskauer’s New England IP Blog, which reports on intellectual property developments occurring in New England and impacting New England companies.
