Seth Raven Carroll grew up in the foothills of South Carolina, where he eventually started working as a whitewater raft guide. He gained a lot of perspective that he applies to being a lawyer while sitting on the back of a rubber raft.
He learned that he needed the folks who signed up to go down the river every bit as much as they needed his experience as a guide. This was a lesson in teamwork, because failing to work as a team usually meant that everyone ended up either stuck on a rock or under water.
Seth also learned that to overcome the dangers on the river or in life, you can’t stop or retreat. Instead, you have to find a way through or around the obstacles in your way until you accomplish your goals.
Finally, Seth learned that those who were humble and respectful of the challenging water were those who were most likely to successfully navigate it.
As a founding partner of Commonwealth Law Group, Seth applies these lessons to his legal practice. At CLG, Seth handles challenging litigation for clients and their families who have suffered serious injuries or death, catastrophic on-the-job injuries, and for those who have been discriminated against or deprived of their constitutional rights.
Such constitutional rights cases often involve injuries resulting from constitutional deprivations, such as clients who have suffered excessive force by law enforcement or those subjected to cruel and unusual punishment in prison.
Seth currently holds the record for the largest recovery for a Virginia prisoner based on claims that they suffered injuries while in prison. Seth has litigated numerous personal injury, civil rights and workers’ compensation cases, successfully representing clients against individuals, contractors, government entities and companies of all sizes, including large, multinational corporations.
He has administrative practice experience with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Department of Labor and the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission. Seth has litigated at all levels of Virginia state court and has federal court experience in both the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia.
When required, Seth has gained admission to litigate cases in courts outside of Virginia. Seth also has experience in appellate work at both the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia.
Seth is a member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice, the Virginia Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association. For the past three years, Seth has served as a member of the Executive Committee for the Civil Rights Division of the American Association for Justice.
