Shawn B. Cage, co-leader of the firm’s Electrical Practice Group, focuses his practice on client counseling and the preparation and prosecution of trademark and patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He also has experience in complex patent and trademark licensing negotiations, and has extensive experience in opinion drafting. Currently, Shawn is an active member of the Intellectual Property Owner U.S. Post-Grant Patent Office Practice Committee.
Shawn has experience with intellectual property matters directed to RF communication, RF signal detection and processing, semiconductor device structures, nano-scale electrical components, optical systems, optical disc structures, image processing devices and systems, and computer-related technologies, including operating system and application software; network systems; distributed computing environments; network-node discovery and management; supply chain processing and management; and high-, medium- and low-voltage power systems, including power distribution and transformer and electric motor/generator technologies.
Prior to joining Buchanan, Shawn was an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of a Michigan-based law firm, where he drafted utility and design patent applications based on invention disclosures and inventor consultation. He represented foreign and domestic clients before the USPTO in prosecution of utility and design patent applications, and he prepared and prosecuted PCT and trademark applications, as well as patentability and infringement opinions.
Shawn was a student associate in a Washington, D.C.-based law firm while he attended law school. He gained experience in drafting patent applications and represented foreign and domestic clients before the USPTO in the prosecution of patent applications.
Shawn is a former patent examiner for the USPTO, where he examined patent applications for the image processing arts, which include technologies such as biometrics, image/object recognition and image compressors, among others. Shawn also has industry experience as a digital designer with a leading Department of Defense Contractor, in which he designed and tested digital circuits and broads.
Shawn is active in the community. He has served as a volunteer coach for a local youth soccer and basketball. Professionally, Shawn has volunteered as a mediator and alternative dispute resolution specialist for the District Court of Maryland. From 2008-2011, he served as co-chair of the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Patent Litigation Committee Special Sub-Committee on Opinions of Counsel Post-Seagate.
