Shawn S. Ledingham, Jr. is an associate in the Litigation Department, and a member of the Sports Law Group. Shawn has substantial experience in and knowledge of the sports industry and focuses on antitrust claims and intraleague relationships.
Shortly after joining Proskauer, where he had been a summer associate, he represented Major League Baseball in its investigation into Frank McCourt’s ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as in the subsequent Dodgers bankruptcy.
Since then, Shawn has continued to represent and counsel many sports leagues and teams in addition to MLB, including Major League Soccer, the National Basketball Association, the Women’s National Basketball Association, the Pac-12 Conference, the Big East Conference, the World Surf League, the Drone Racing League, and Oracle Team USA. Shawn has been named as a Rising Star in entertainment and sports law by Super Lawyers.
Beyond sports, Shawn represents clients in a variety of industries, including telecommunications, television, aerospace and defense, banking and finance, private equity, health care, waste management and disposal, manufacturing, and retail, in complex litigation at both the state and federal level.
Shawn is actively involved in promoting justice in his community. From 2011 to 2012, he served as counsel to the Los Angeles County Citizens’ Commission on Jail Violence, investigating inappropriate use of force by deputies within the county jail system and assisting in the drafting of a report on the prevalence and causes of deputy-on-inmate violence and potential reforms.
For his work on jail reform, Shawn received the ACLU of Southern California’s Community Service Pro Bono Award and a commendation from the County of Los Angeles. He also maintains a robust pro bono litigation practice and is co-chair of Proskauer’s Los Angeles Pro Bono Committee.
In 2014, he represented the Alliance for a Better Utah in drafting an amicus brief in the landmark Kitchen v. Herbert case, in which Utah’s anti-marriage equality statutes were held unconstitutional by the Tenth Circuit – the first ruling of its kind. He has also represented indigent individuals in state and federal court in actions related to jail violence, sexual assault, and uninhabitable housing.
While in law school, Shawn was the managing editor of the New York University Law Review and chaired the Writing Competition Committee.
