Silvia Fermanian works with clients as a lien-resolution specialist. Simply put, when clients win settlements or judgments, they often face liens for overdue medical bills or owe money to third-party entities. A lien is a legal claim another party or entity has placed on the client’s net settlement proceeds to secure payment for a debt or obligation.
Ms. Fermanian ensures that when a case is finalized, the client is aware of outstanding financial issues that need to be settled. For example, there might be liens filed against a settlement from medical providers, insurance companies, Medicare, and/or social services agencies for clients’ debts.
With more than 20 years of experience, she has helped clients understand the complexities of wrongful death compromises, guardianships, structured settlements and Supplemental Needs Trusts. At Weitz & Luxenberg, she guides clients through all matters related to liens, in particular, those pertaining to Medicaid and Medicare claims, as well Medicare Set Asides.
Ms. Fermanian studied law at New York Law School, from which she earned a juris doctor degree. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, she is fluent in Castilian Spanish. She also speaks limited French.
