Dr. Stephany Small works with clients ranging from large pharmaceutical companies to individual inventors to obtain and protect their intellectual property. Her in-house experience, coupled with her extensive life science research background, equips her to provide clients with technical expertise and comprehensive strategy guidance.
Stephany is a member of the firm’s IP Biotechnology & Life Sciences Practice Group. With a Ph.D. in Cellular and Microbial Biology and research focused on genetics and molecular biology, Stephany focuses her practice on the life sciences fields, including novel plant varieties (e.g., in the ornamental, fruit, and cannabis industries), transgenic plants, diagnostic testing methods/apparatus, pharmaceuticals and biologics, and treatment methods.
Prior to joining Buchanan, Stephany worked in-house at a biopharmaceutical corporation that developed therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. Her work in-house highlighted the importance of the relationship between intellectual property and business development, marketing and regulation.
With more than seven years of life science research experience along with extensive course work, Stephany is well-versed in the chemical and biological arts. Her Ph.D. work involved mesoderm development and gene regulation. Specifically, she investigated transcription factor regulatory elements in an animal model using a variety of techniques including molecular cloning, genetic crossing, microscopy, plasmid construction, reverse transcription PCR, RNA interference, protein purification, bioinformatics and cell cultures.
Stephany prepares and prosecutes U.S. and foreign patent applications for inventions related to all aspects of life science, including new varieties of plants and transgenic plants, biotechnology, chemistry, diagnostic testing methods, pharmaceuticals and biologics. She is involved in FDA Orange Book submissions and Patent Term Extension Applications. Stephany also assists clients with preparing opinions relating to patentability and freedom to operate.
As a member of the firm’s IP Litigation group and the Patent Office Litigation group, Stephany has litigated patent interferences and inter partes review proceedings before the U.S. Patent Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).
