Stephen Zinda

Blank Rome LLP

Stephen D. Zinda concentrates his practice on a wide range of intellectual property areas, including:

  • Patent, copyright (including Digital Millennium Copyright Act), trademark, trade dress, and trade secret litigation;
  • Invalidity and noninfringement opinion work;
  • Inter partes reviews;
  • Client counseling;
  • Licensing;
  • Mediation; and
  • Patent preparation and prosecution.

Stephen has considerable experience in various aspects of litigation, including discovery, brief drafting, and hearing practice. He has argued in several claim construction and preliminary injunction hearings, and has written many claim construction briefs.

Additionally, Stephen has drafted several petitions for inter partesreview, all of which were instituted and then either settled before a final decision or resulted in invalidity of all challenged claims. He has participated in the inter partes review process from start to finish, as well as opposing the appeal of an inter partes review decision.

Stephen has represented clients in diverse areas, such as down hole tools, digital rock analysis, semiconductor fabrication, Fibre Channel networking, computer systems, software, and wireless communications technology. The complexities of the technologies he has handled span from 4G wireless standard technologies to purely mechanical sand separators.

Prior to attending law school, Stephen worked in the energy sector as a Protection & Control Technician. In that role, he designed and implemented distribution and transmission power grid systems in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, acted as project leader, and performed emergency maintenance on the power grid during significant weather related blackouts. Through that role, he developed valuable leadership and project management experience that he uses for the benefit of his clients today.

During law school, Stephen served as an Internet publishing editor for the Houston Law Review (Board 49). His comment, “Preserving the Copyright Balance: Why Copyright Misuse Should Invalidate Software Licenses Designed to Prohibit Resale and Oust Service Market Competition,” was published in 48 Hous. L. Rev. 1241 (2012).

Stephen is an avid basketball player, golfer, and technology enthusiast.
