Sue Stead is a former insurance regulator and seasoned advisor to clients in the insurance industry. She counsels clients on strategies for achieving business goals while mitigating regulatory risks, the practical business effects of emerging issues in insurance, industry innovation, alternative distribution channels, collection and use of data in insurance operations, product design, social media, electronic transactions, and legislative and regulatory developments.
Sue advises clients on developing compliant business practices, obtaining regulatory approvals, proactively managing regulatory investigations and effective communications with regulators.
Sue spent 15 years as a regulator with the Ohio Department of Insurance, serving as staff lawyer and Assistant Director for Market Conduct, Fraud & Enforcement and Agent Licensing.
As a regulator, she led several committees at the NAIC, including the committee that developed the Market Conduct Annual Statement. As a result of her lengthy experience as a regulator, Sue is able to help insurers understand their regulators’ priorities and frame issues effectively.
Subsequent to her tenure as a regulator, Sue has maintained a regulatory practice in Columbus, Ohio and Washington DC. She began her career as an insurance defense lawyer.
Sue is a frequent speaker on insurance regulatory issues. She is a member and serves on the board of the Federation of Regulatory Counsel and is the chair of CBS Agency, Inc., an affiliate of the Columbus Bar Association. She is the past chair of the IRES Foundation and the American Bar Association Insurance Regulation Committee. Sue has earned the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Market Conduct Manager (MCM) designations.
