T. Braxton McKee is a highly experienced attorney specializing in areas of law such as commercial and health care for over 30 years. He serves as the Chairman of the Health Care Practice Group of the law firm Kaufman & Canoles.
His health care practice includes all areas of the law impacting fraud and abuse, medical practices, regulatory guidance, Medicare & Medicaid laws and regulations, routine operational issues, hospital-physician joint ventures, certificates of public need, etc.
Under commercial law practice, he handles issues concerning corporate law, mergers & acquisitions, and contract negotiation.
He has extensive skill and experience in merging medical practices and has successfully facilitated as well as closed several major medical group integrations including Mid-Atlantic Women’s Care PLLC, Southern Surgical Associates PLLC, and Gastrointestinal & Liver Specialists of Tidewater PLLC.
Attorney McKee has helped create physician groups affiliated with major hospitals and health systems throughout the Mid-Atlantic. His clients include the University of Virginia Physicians Group, Bayview Physicians Group, etc.
He is also instrumental in forming numerous joint ventures between physician groups and major hospital systems. For example, in one case he has represented a joint venture of hospital and oncology group in obtaining certificates of public need for comprehensive cancer care centers.
He has represented hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and other providers in general healthcare matters. He has helped form many independent physician practices and has developed several physician practice management companies.
He has always involved himself in creating provider networks for insurance contracts. He has developed a thorough understanding of the business and regulatory issues that affect health care over the years via his legal practice.

He has emerged as a leader in handling legal issues concerning the medical field, and in this capacity, he has served as a lecturer and expert witness on Medicare fraud and abuse issues. He frequently undertakes speaking engagements at health care industry events and legal programs.
T. Braxton McKee has obtained the membership of the National Health Lawyers Association, the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
He is a Former Member of Board of Governors at the Health Care Section of the Virginia State Bar. He served as the Chairman of Health Law Section of the Virginia Bar Association during 2001-2002 and is currently a member of its Board of Health Law Section.
He was also the Chairman of 2007 Gala of the Board of Directors at the American Heart Association.
Chambers USA recognized him as one of America’s Leading Business Lawyers during the period 2004-2011. Virginia Business Magazine, Legal Elite, named him the Best Lawyer in Virginia in 2006 and published his achievements from 2005 to 2018.

T. Braxton McKee obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and Bachelor’s of Arts degree with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1984 and 1981 respectively.
