Tamatane J. Aga is an intellectual property attorney with a particular emphasis on patents. As a registered patent attorney, he has experience in patent prosecution and litigation involving various technological fields, including energy production, manufacturing equipment, semiconductor devices, optical equipment, automotive, medical devices, and consumer products.
Prior to joining Venable, Tama was a U.S. Patent Examiner and examined applications relating to drilling and completions, mining, and downhole tools. Prior to becoming an attorney, Tama worked as an engineer at one of the supermajor energy companies, and has experience in both downstream and upstream oil and gas operations.
Tama has represented clients in cases before district courts and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He has experience in many phases of litigation, including conducting initial case assessment, working with experts, participating in settlement negotiations, and appeals.
Tama has extensive familiarity with AIA post-grant review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He has participated in several inter partes review proceedings in the power generation and automotive fields, among others. Tama has also successfully utilized Pre-Issuance Submissions to help his clients prevent the issuance of overly broad patents.
Tama leverages his industry experience and his experience with utility patents, design patents, utility models, and other forms of intellectual property (such as trade dress and trade secrets) to implement worldwide intellectual property strategies for his clients.
He also helps his clients navigate the patent rights of their competitors. In this regard, he frequently advises clients regarding issues of non-infringement, design-around, and freedom to operate, and prepares related opinions of counsel.
