Tamerlin J. Godley is a litigation partner with Munger, Tolles & Olson. She excels at handling complex business litigation disputes and specializes in entertainment litigation and advising. She serves as counsel to the major studios, networks, recording companies and music publishers, including Turner Broadcasting, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures and Warner Music Group, along with many other entertainment related entities.

In 2016, Ms. Godley obtained summary judgment in a trademark and copyright action for the popular Life is Beautiful music festival and in 2017, she won a victory on demurrer for various Warner Bros. entities in an idea theft case relating to the popular daytime talk show “The Real.”

Ms. Godley’s litigation experience extends to other complicated business disputes, including representing:

  • Transocean as a member of the trial team in the second phase of the BP oil spill litigation;
  • Citigroup in overturning the largest FINRA award ever issued;
  • Sidley Austin in its tax shelter litigation; and
  • Occidental Petroleum in a dispute with Chevron, garnering an across the board win for Occidental and a full award of the client’s attorneys’ fees.

Ms. Godley has been recognized as a leading lawyer by Chambers USA. In 2012, she received a California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year Award for her representation of Warner Bros. in its highly publicized dispute with Charlie Sheen. In 2017, Ms. Godley was recognized among the Most Influential Intellectual Property Lawyers by the Los Angeles Business Journal. Ms. Godley was named as one of The Hollywood Reporter’s 2018 Power Lawyers and recognized among the top attorneys in the entertainment business in Variety’s 2018 Legal Impact Report.

Ms. Godley is passionately committed to giving back to the community. She led the pro bono team that obtained a preliminary injunction in January 2016 blocking implementation of Nevada’s sweeping voucher law, which risked diversion of more than $200 million from the public schools. In July 2016, Ms. Godley successfully argued before the Nevada Supreme Court, against well-known Supreme Court advocate Paul Clement, to permanently keep the law from going into effect.

Ms. Godley also was appointed by Sherriff McDonald to serve on the Los Angeles County Inmate Welfare Commission. In addition, she serves as vice president of the Pasadena Educational Foundation and as immediate past president of the Armory Center for the Arts.

Ms. Godley formerly served two terms on the Pasadena Human Relations Commission. She previously served as an elected official on the South Pasadena School Board; on the Rampart Independent Review Panel, which investigated and analyzed the Los Angeles Police Department’s discipline and oversight practices; and as deputy general counsel for the Citizens’ Commission on Jail Violence.

Ms. Godley graduated from UCLA with a double major in English and political science, obtained a master’s degree in English from Cal State Northridge and taught in South Central Los Angeles before going to law school. She received her J.D., Order of the Coif, in 1996 from the USC Gould School of Law. Prior to joining Munger Tolles, Ms. Godley clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Harry L. Hupp of the Central District of California.
