After receiving a B.A. degree in English, he entered the marines through the NROTC program at Cornell University. He initially served in Vietnam as a Marine infantry commander and went to the law school through the Marines in 1975.
While serving in the Marine Corps, he earned several medals and decorations such as Legion of Merit with two gold stars, Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon.
He completed his J.D. degree cum laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1978. He went on to hold several positions such as a prosecutor, defense lawyer, staff judge advocate, Law Center Director, and senior military judge.
He obtained a certificate with honors from Graduate Course at the Judge Advocate General’s School in U.S. Army and earned his M.A. degree with distinction from the U.S. Naval War College in 1982 and 1990 respectively. He became Top lawyer in the Marine Corps in 1996.
He handled two U.S. Supreme Court cases for the military in 1993 and 1994. He held the post of a brigadier general when he retired from the Marines in 2000.
Ted Hess came to Colorado in 2000 and has since then taken more cases to trial than any other Western Slope attorney. He initially served as a trial lawyer in Garfield, Eagle, and Pitkin Counties and worked with the Law Offices of Thomas D. Silverman.
He started an immigration practice in the year 2005 and established the law firm Hess & Schubert LLP with his partner Bill Schubert in 2008. He represented clients in personal injury, civil cases, criminal, and immigration.
He founded his current law firm Ted Hess & Associates LLC in August 2014 and has since then provided legal services in Western Colorado.
