Virginia A. Melvin, the US Head of Legal Training, is responsible for developing and implementing legal training for Mayer Brown’s US lawyers so that all lawyers function at the same high level of excellence across all offices. The programs employ various engaging media and presentation formats and are annually delivered in more than 200 classes for lawyers from all practice areas and experience levels.
Course topics range from substantive legal knowledge and practice skills to key practice competencies, such as negotiation, presentation, and legal writing and drafting skills.
Ginny is also involved in the professional development of the firm’s associates. In this context, she creates programming, plans retreats, helps integrate new and lateral associates, establishes development competencies, and leads other professional development initiatives. In addition, Ginny assists with the integration of knowledge management and training to facilitate practice for the lawyers.
Prior to joining Mayer Brown in her current administrative position in 2002, Ginny practiced finance law with another New York law firm. Her practice experience focused on negotiating and documenting complex syndicated financing transactions, including acquisition financings, leveraged buyouts and general corporate borrowing in public and private markets.
