Walter R. Byrne, Jr. joined Stoll Keenon Ogden in 2016, continuing his accomplished track record of serving banks and bank holding companies over the course of three decades. He is a Member of the Banking, Business Services, and Mergers & Acquisitions practices, focusing on financial institutions law and regulation, corporate law, securities law, and chartering of financial institutions.
Before joining SKO, Walt was a member of another large Kentucky-based law firm. He was also a commercial banker with First National Bank of Louisville and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Walt remains active within the local banking and business community, serving as a director of Peoples Exchange Bank located in Winchester, KY. On a national level, he participates on the Banking Law Committee of the American Bar Association.
Banking: Walt’s extensive experience as a banking attorney and former commercial banker allows him to serve financial institutions in numerous capacities. He assists with the acquisition and sale of community banks and bank-holding companies, providing counsel from the earliest planning and negotiation phases through post-closing transactions. He also advises clients on compliance with securities regulations.
Business Services: Leveraging his deep expertise in banking law, Walt represents corporate clients across a broad range of business activities, including financial planning, lending and compliance with stock exchange rules. He is adept at looking at a unique situation and tailoring a legal plan that leaves clients well positioned for a favorable outcome.
Mergers & Acquisitions: Walt’s work in this practice group is mainly focused on the purchase and sale of financial institutions, but he can assist nearly any type of business. He negotiates agreements, counsels on appropriate transaction structures and advises on tax and regulatory issues.
