Dirk Lasater focuses his practice on intellectual property matters, helping clients protect and leverage their technology and brands in a wide range of industries, including software, technology, insurance, entertainment, financial services and health care. Dirk assists clients with intellectual property brand management and enforcement, and when necessary, in intellectual property disputes through litigation in state and federal courts, arbitration and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
As an outgrowth of that practice, Dirk represents clients in advertising-related matters, through assertion and defense of false advertising claims and assists in mitigating litigation risk through the creation, implementation and maintenance of advertising policies that comply with the Lanham Act, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance and state law enforcement regimes.
Dirk also has extensive experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating a variety of documents, including technology licenses, software development agreements, SaaS/cloud services agreements, consulting services agreements, trademark coexistence agreements, and IP assignment/ownership agreements.
Dirk maintains an active pro bono and volunteer practice and has represented nonprofit entities with intellectual property concerns, individuals seeking political asylum, military service members in guardianship proceedings, consumers alleging fraudulent business practices and individuals seeking to secure rights for animals.
He has helped provide cancer patients with advanced medical directives, including living wills and powers of attorney, and he launched a group dedicated to improving reading skills of high-risk elementary students.
