Jeff Patterson focuses his practice on patent preparation, prosecution, counseling and licensing. He helps clients acquire, protect, manage and enforce their intellectual property, with a particular emphasis in patent-related matters.

Jeff has significant experience in drafting and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications in a number of diverse technology fields, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, encryption, virtual and augmented reality, autonomous vehicle and robotic systems, laser tracking and guidance systems, telemetry for remote systems, semiconductor devices, distributed/cloud computing, internet analytics (Big Data), telecommunications, medical devices and software platforms, technical clothing, outdoor equipment (bicycles, skis, snowboards, baseball equipment, and protective helmets), power sports equipment and other mechanical arts.

Jeff draws on his background in science and research to inform his understanding of his clients’ patents. Before law school, he was a research physicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory as well as other research facilities, where he worked to design, build and test spacecraft, robotics and avionics systems to withstand the harsh radiation environments inherent in deep-space exploratory missions.

Jeff focused his scientific research in the area of radiation-hardening microelectronics and semiconductor devices. Jeff also managed various research and development programs funded by NASA and Caltech. He earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Colorado Boulder, where he studied pion-proton interactions, and a B.S. in physics and mathematics from the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.
