Matt Wagner is a partner at Diserio Martin and Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group. He counsels clients in the global procurement, enforcement, licensing, commercialization, and strategic planning for worldwide brand and product development, including trademarks, copyrights, and industrial designs.
Matt serves as outside general and intellectual property counsel, primarily to international cosmetics and consumer goods companies, and leads the firm’s active intellectual property litigation practice in federal courts throughout the United States, and trademark oppositions and cancellations at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), through its Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB).
Matt has more than 20 years experience as an IP litigator and has appeared in more than 150 federal lawsuits relating to some form of IP and concerning diverse technology and subject matter, such as cosmetics, consumer goods and personal care products, publishing and literature, comic books and characters, eyewear, electronic transaction processing and pre-paid gift card technology, industrial lasers, cable television and navigation devices, and computer software.
He has extensive experience obtaining emergency injunctions and conducting civil seizures and asset restraints to combat counterfeiting and unauthorized gray market imports. Matt has acted as an expert in federal trademark infringement litigation, and provided formal opinions on trademark damages, jury instructions and verdict forms. Through a trusted network of foreign associates, Matt coordinates the management, enforcement and defense of intellectual property rights worldwide.
Matt is an elected official in Fairfield, Connecticut, where he is a Commissioner and the Chairman of the town’s Plan and Zoning Commission. He is active in the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), where he is presently a member of the Board of Directors and immediate past Chair of the Copyright Law Committee. Matt is also a frequent lecturer of accredited continuing legal education programs in intellectual property. He is a published author of various articles and papers in copyright and trademark matters.
