Richard Glovsky

Locke Lord LLP

Richard D. Glovsky, who co-chairs the Firm’s Labor and Employment Practice Group, handles significant employment related litigation, including class actions, wage and hour issues, and discrimination and retaliation claims.

Dick prosecutes cases for financial services, healthcare, hospitality companies and other businesses to protect their trade secrets and to prevent former employees from violating non-competition and non-solicitation obligations. Dick also has developed a niche specialty advising clients on Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) programs and Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) reports.

Recently, Dick concluded expeditiously a trade secret theft case by securing the entry of a permanent injunction in Massachusetts in a case arising out of the state of Michigan. Similarly, last year, Dick wrapped up litigation by avoiding class certification on behalf of a construction company client and secured a verdict in a class action case in the United States District Court for the District of Florida for a Paris-based client.

He also recently prevailed in a preliminary injunction context after two days of trial in a matter in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida involving violations of a former executive’s non-solicitation obligations. In the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Dick first-chaired, and his client prevailed, in one of the few evidentiary hearings that have been conducted on the issue of class certification.

Dick has tried other complex matters involving numerous business issues, defamation claims, and wrongful termination actions. Internationally, Dick has handled matters involving the laws of Canada, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, China, Vietnam and New Zealand, where his clients recently prevailed in a trial resulting in an award amounting to NZD$6.3M relating to their investments in a winery there.

Dick also counsels companies and officers on executive compensation matters and strategies designed to avoid the cost and expense of litigation. Dick is consistently recognized in Chambers USA Leading Lawyers for Business, for his work in the field of Labor & Employment, and was referred to there as a “superb trial attorney” and “admired for his proficiency in a diverse range of employment issues.”

In September 2014, Dick was inducted into the Litigation Counsel of America as a Fellow. According to LCA, “membership in this invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society is highly selective and is limited to deserving, experienced and highly qualified lawyers.” Fellows are selected and invited into Fellowship after being evaluated on effectiveness and accomplishment in litigation and trial work, along with ethical reputation.

Dick founded and co-chairs the Latino-Jewish Roundtable. He has served as the National Hispanic-Jewish Relations chair, National Civil Rights chair and National Education chair of the Anti-Defamation League and was a recipient of that organization’s David A. Rose Civil Rights Award.

In addition, Dick has received numerous other tributes, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award, The Charles F. Moore, Jr. Award and The Class of 1926 Award from Dartmouth College; the Community Service Award from the American Jewish Committee; and the Community Service Award from the Lena Park Development Corporation. Dick also served for five years as the Chair of the Human Rights Commission of the City of Newton and as president of his class at Dartmouth College.

On November 8, 2017, Dick chaired the Centennial Gala of the Judge Baker Children’s Center. Dick has been a legal commentator for National Public Radio, New England Cable News and WCVB/Channel 5. He has lectured at Boston College Law School, Northeastern University School of Law, Brandeis International Business School and the University of Massachusetts.

Dick has also been profiled in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Boston Business Journal and The Boston Herald. Dick also was the subject of two opinion pieces by William F. Buckley, Jr. and is highlighted in Buckley’s book, “In Search of Anti-Semitism.”

El Planeta, the largest Hispanic newspaper in Massachusetts, named Dick to its annual list of 100 of the most influential people in the Hispanic community, in recognition of his efforts in reaching out to the Latino community.

Before entering private practice, Dick worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in Boston, where he was named Chief of the Civil Division. In that role, Dick supervised all civil litigation in Massachusetts involving the federal government, including all cases brought by or against the United States, its agencies, and employees in state and federal courts.

He also expanded the role of the United States Attorney’s Office to include antitrust and civil rights litigation. Prior to becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Dick worked for Antonin Scalia in the United States Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel. In law school, Dick was an editor of the law review.
