Joseph F. Rich concentrates his practice on a wide range of litigation matters including product liability, general and professional negligence, construction defect and breach of warranties.
Joe manages a robust caseload ranging from general civil litigation to subrogation and recovery matters arising from complex property damage loss events, such as fires, product failures and defects, mechanical system failures, plumbing and water system releases, sprinkler system failures, building collapses, roofing failures and deficiencies, and other construction defects.
In May 2015, Joe relocated to the Miami office from Philadelphia deepening the firm’s capabilities to serve clients’ litigation needs in Florida, the Southeast, and Puerto Rico. Joe was appointed vice chair, office managing partner of the Miami office in January 2018.
Joe is admitted to practice in Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, including all federal district courts in Florida, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia, as well as the Eastern and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania.
Joe is also admitted to practice in the United States District Court for Puerto Rico and has experience litigating general litigation and recovery matters for clients in federal court in Puerto Rico.
Joe serves as co-chair of Cozen O’Connor’s Subrogation and Recovery Department’s Tech Toys & Products Task Force, which oversees resources and developments related to fire losses arising out of failures of tech toys and related products, including batteries and chargers. Joe also serves as director of the Summer Associate Program and Pro-Bono Coordinator for the firm’s Miami Office.
He volunteers through Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., with the Small Claims Clinics that provide advice to low-income individuals on how to file or defend small claims court matters. Joe is also a member of the 11thJudicial Circuit Unlicensed Practice of Law Committee for Miami-Dade County, Florida.
Joe is actively involved in The National Association of Subrogation Professionals (NASP) and he will be co-chairing NASP’s 2018 Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. Joe previously served as co-chair of NASP’s DC/MD Chapter and has presented at NASP Annual Conferences since 2013, as well as NASP Litigation Skills Conference in 2015.
He also was a presenter at the 2017 National Conference held by Nexxus Solutions Group, a national contractor and service provider network serving the U.S. insurance industry. Joe frequently presents webinars and CLE seminars on subrogation and recovery, general litigation, civil procedure, and technology topics and regularly authors educational alerts and articles on developments in these areas.
Prior to joining the firm, Joe served as a one-year judicial law clerk for Hon. John A. Terry of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. He earned his law degree from Villanova University School of Law, where he was a member of the Moot Court Executive Board.
Joe was awarded Best Oral Advocate of the Preliminary Rounds at the University of Minnesota Law School’s National Civil Rights Moot Court Competition and served as a Brief Evaluator for Villanova’s own Reimel Moot Court Competition.
Joe earned his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y., where he was selected to join Alpha Sigma Nu (The National Honor Society of Jesuit Colleges and Universities). He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Le Moyne College Alumni Association.
