Joy Malby Bertrand

Joy Malby Bertrand is the principal attorney at the Joy Bertrand Law LLC. Her practice areas are federal trial consulting, electronic discovery under the Federal Rules of Evidence, complex criminal litigation, and civil rights litigation.

Attorney Bertrand is a native of Chicago. He has done Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, Political Science from the St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in 1991. She attained Master of Arts, Public Affairs and Policy Analysis from the reputed University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993.

She has earned Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the Indiana University-Bloomington University of Arizona in 1996. She graduated from the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College in Dubois, Wyoming in 2011. She completed the training for faculty of Trial Lawyers College in 2014.

Attorney Joy Bertrand is consistently committed to service and social justice for all. She is an active professional member of various associations such as the State Bar of Wisconsin, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, American Association for Justice, and American Inns of Court.

She served as a clerk for the Cook County Office of the Public Guardian while in law school. She handled trial court child abuse and neglect matters while working as a provisionally licensed attorney under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711.

She provided research and writing to the office’s long-term litigation unit for a federal lawsuit against the Department of Children and Family Services.

Attorney Joy Bertrand worked as the statewide coordinator of the Wisconsin Coalition Against the Death Penalty after completing law school. She later served as Assistant District Attorney at Milwaukee County from 1998 to 2005.

She won four federal jury trials as well as successfully litigated many Seventh Circuit appeals, including a Solicitor General appeal while on assignment with the US Attorney’s Office. Five cases among them resulted in published decisions.

Attorney Joy Malby Bertrand began private practice in 2005. Her emphasis was on federal litigation. Her criminal practice includes different kinds of cases, ranging from disorderly conduct and littering to white collar fraud and homicide.
