Nazish Shabbir

Nazish Shabbir focuses her practice on intellectual property with an emphasis on patents. Her work includes drafting patent applications and patentability opinions, managing foreign patent applications and prosecuting patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including management of responses and participation in interviews with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Nazish also provides recommendations on how clients can effectively protect their intellectual property.

Prior to focusing her practice on intellectual property, Nazish spent several years practicing complex civil litigation, including federal multidistrict litigation and consolidated state court actions, with an emphasis on product liability issues involving pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers.

She represented major U.S. and international corporations and individual clients on various phases of the litigation from early case assessment and discovery through dispositive motion practice and trial preparation.

Nazish has also counseled Food and Drug Administration-regulated companies on regulatory and compliance issues involving the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and other health care laws and regulations.

Additionally, she has co-authored the firm’s monthly Dietary Supplement & Cosmetics Legal Bulletin and is active with the firm’s business development efforts. Nazish is also involved in pro bono work and is a certified guardian ad litem.

Nazish is a member of Shook’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and is passionate about furthering the firm’s diversity initiatives, including the firm’s Diversity Writing Program. Additionally, Nazish has been a mentor for local law students through the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s Mentoring Program.

She is active with the Asian American Bar Association of Kansas City and currently serves as the organization’s membership chair. Nazish has also served as a supervising attorney to candidates participating in the firm’s summer associate program and acts as a mentor to junior associates as part of the firm’s mentoring program.

During law school, Nazish clerked for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-Office of General Counsel, where she drafted opinion letters and prepared various litigation documents, and researched Medicaid, Medicare and other health care regulations.

In addition, Nazish interned with the University of Kansas Center for Technology Commercialization, where she performed prior art searches and drafted patentability opinions and licensing agreements.
