Timothy Carroll, a member of our Intellectual Property and Technology group, is viewed by clients and peers as a go-to patent litigator, and has earned the respect of his peers for his numerous successes litigating patent cases involving cutting-edge technology in such areas as medical devices, green technologies, mobile apps, location-based services, messaging systems, Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats, and content management platforms, as well as trade secret disputes involving defense contractors, defense systems and aerospace products. Representing both leading and emerging technology companies.
Tim has secured trial wins and preliminary injunctions, forced adversaries to stipulate to non-infringement, won summary judgment awards, earned substantial attorneys’ fee awards and prevailed in claim-construction arguments.
Tim routinely leads many joint-defense groups involving some of the largest and most sophisticated companies and law firms in the US. His national, high-stakes practice, impressive win-loss record, aggressive but fair approach, and exceptional advocacy skills have all contributed to the strong rapport he has built with clients and colleagues.
Tim recently achieved several victories for companies forced to take aggressive steps to protect their intellectual property, or to defend against claims of patent infringement and/or trade secret misappropriation.
Tim also has extensive experience in inter partes reviews (IPRs) and other post-grant proceedings. In addition to litigation, Tim has counseled more than 100 global businesses, including two Fortune 15 companies, on adopting and implementing lawful complaint information management programs as well as on e-discovery and litigation readiness initiatives.
Recognized as a patent litigation standout by Intellectual Asset Management Patent 1000, Tim is a member of the Illinois Bar and the trial bar of the Northern District of Illinois, and he is admitted to practice before some of the busiest patent litigation dockets in the US, including the Eastern District of Texas, the Western District of Wisconsin and the Northern District of Illinois.
Tim is frequently called for media commentary on compliance and e-discovery issues, and he has been quoted in such publications as the Chicago Tribune, Compliance Week, Metropolitan Corporate Counsel and the Privacy and Data Law Journal. Tim also has been routinely recognized by Illinois Super Lawyers and as a “Leading Lawyer” for IP by the Leading Lawyers Network.
