William H. Schwarzschild, III

William H. Schwarzschild, III’s practice focuses on corporate, banking, corporate finance and bankruptcy and creditors’ rights matters. He has served as lead counsel to committees, banks, insurance companies, trade creditors, indenture trustees, airlines, municipalities and other constituencies in pre-bankruptcy workouts and in the context of bankruptcy proceedings and bankruptcy litigation. He has written and lectured extensively on matters of corporate reorganizations, creditors’ rights, bankruptcy and debt restructurings and workouts.

Tracy is an active member of the American, Richmond and Virginia bar associations, the District of Columbia Bar, the Tennessee State Bar and the Virginia State Bar. He also is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia and the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia and the District of Columbia.

He has served on the board of directors of various public and private companies including the board of Central Fidelity Bank, Richmond, Va., from 1978 until 1984 and on the board of directors of Central Fidelity Banks, Inc. from 1984 until 1989. In 1989, he was named outside general counsel to Central Fidelity and served in that capacity until the corporation merged with Wachovia Corporation in 1997.

Prior to joining Williams Mullen in 1975, Tracy served as general counsel, Tennessee Energy Office, Nashville, Tenn., where he practiced before the Federal Power Commission, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other federal and state agencies.

He is actively involved in the Richmond community through his service as a board member of the Richmond Symphony, a director and former president of the Hebrew Fund for the Aged, a director of Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation and other charitable organizations. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the College of William & Mary’s Marshall Wythe School of Law.

Tracy graduated from the University of Virginia in 1970. He then worked for Chemical Bank until 1971. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Vanderbilt University and was admitted to practice law in Tennessee in 1974, in Virginia in 1975 and in the District of Columbia in 1994.
