Ellis H. Pretlow is an attorney focusing her practice on areas such as trusts & estate administration, and complex family wealth & tax planning. She serves as an associate in the Norfolk office of the law firm Kaufman & Canoles PC and concentrates on providing private client services to business owners, families, fiduciaries, professionals, and charities.
Being a Suffolk native and daughter of a trusts and estates lawyer, she naturally came to the trusts and estates arena. She learned the value of hard work, dedication, community involvement and justice from her father and inherited the virtues of love, compassion, education and the arts from her mother.
She holds the license to practice law in the state of Virginia since 2012. She provides invaluable counseling and ensures the proper transfer of wealth, property, and businesses for her clients.
Under estate planning, she routinely drafts powers of attorney, advance medical directives, wills, charitable trusts, revocable trusts, and irrevocable trusts. She often intersects with family business succession planning by helping in the formation of closely held entities.
The Virginia Business Magazine named her in the Legal Elite in 2018. She has won the James W.H. Stewart Tax Law Award in 2012 and served as the Managing Editor of the Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice.
Ellis Pretlow obtained her Juris Doctorate, Manga Cum Laude from the Washington and Lee University School of Law and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Virginia in 2012 and 2009 respectively.
She received the honors such as the Order of the Coif and the Omicron Delta Kappa in the Alpha Circle, during her studying years.
She served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Karon O. Bowdre at the U.S. Northern District Court of Alabama during 2012-2013. She joined her current law firm Kaufman & Canoles PC in the year 2013.
She is a member of the Steering project committee called Downtown 100, Hampton Roads Estate Planning Council, Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association, Virginia Bar Association, and the Professional Advisory Committee of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation as well as the ACCESS College Foundation.
She is also on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast Council and the Hampton Roads Gift Planning Council as well as a member of the Class of 2018 at the LEAD Hampton Roads and tHRive, a program of the Hampton Roads Chamber.
Ellis H. Pretlow contributes to the community by serving as a Volunteer Attorney in the Community Tax Law Project, on the Philanthropy Committee of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, and Complete the Streets Committee of associations such as the King’s Daughters Lafayette River Circle, the Downtown Norfolk Council, and the United Way Women’s United.
