James B. Amler is a counsel in the firm’s White Collar & Regulatory Group, Investment Management Litigation Group and Consumer Finance Group. Mr. Amler represents clients throughout the financial services industry, including registered investment advisers to mutual funds, hedge funds, private equity funds, investment banks and insurance companies.
Mr. Amler has extensive experience defending companies and individuals in federal and state regulatory investigations, enforcement actions, and internal investigations and compliance matters. Mr. Amler also has broad commercial litigation experience representing financial services companies in federal and state courts, including in securities litigation, class actions and shareholder actions.
Mr. Amler maintains an active pro bono practice, including work with the ACLU, Amnesty International, the Immigrant and Refugee Justice Program of the City Bar Justice Center, Independent Diplomat, NYU Law School’s Center on the Administration of Criminal Law, and the UN Independent Expert on Human Rights and the Environment, as well as with families of children with disabilities.
He was one of the principle drafters of the widely-acclaimed report of the International Bar Association’s Presidential Task Force on Climate Change Justice and Human Rights: “Achieving Justice and Human Rights in an Era of Climate Disruption”.
Mr. Amler received his J.D. cum laude from University of Michigan Law School in 2007, where he was a Clarence Darrow Scholar and served as executive articles editor of the Michigan Journal of International Law. He received his B.A. in International Studies from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1999, with a minor in Chemistry.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. Amler worked at Insight Venture Partners in New York in financial analysis and investor relations. In 2005, Mr. Amler was the Everett Public Service Fellow at the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility in the human rights working group.
Mr. Amler joined the firm in 2007 and was admitted to the bar in New York in 2008. He is admitted to practice in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
